Warren Brown Prindle, a painter in the realist tradition, is known for his symbolic figurative compositions. The recurring details in his art immerse the viewer in a complex and inviting puzzle. When we think we have one symbolic image figured out, another demands much contemplative thought. We are made to feel that we are part of a “Divine Theatre” where we, the viewers, bring some of our own interpretations to the drama. Prindle worked many years in Chicago, teaching figure drawing and anatomy at the American Academy of Art. During this time, while living in the Uptown area, he encountered a drifter who epitomized a man that had been dashed about by many years of hard living. Prindle persuaded the man to model for several of his paintings, including Fedora Shekinah and Uncertain Hour. The man eventually disappeared after being Prindle’s model for fifteen paintings. |
