>> SPECIAL SECTION: Fireside Science Fiction |
| Imaginarium favorite Rod Bennett surveys voyages extraordinaires on film, those tales that begin at the fireside, but soon lead to the moon, the center of the earth, or 20,000 leagues
under the sea. | | |

The Imaginarium is a program of seminars, films, discussions and other
activities at the annual Cornerstone Festival (July 1-4, 2004) in Central
Illinois. We've heard that there's also music at Cornerstone Festival, but
we wouldn't know anything about that. We do know there is another
film-related program at Cornerstone called Flickerings, which drives our attendees
crazy because it means they have to choose between two incredibly cool activities
happening simultaneously. It's really not a bad problem to have. You
should try it sometime. Like this July.

A N N O U N C I N G : I M A G I N A R I U M 2 0 0 4 !
T e n Y e a r s o f I m a g i n a r i u m @ C o r n e r s t o n e F e s t i v a l
W e had only the vaguest idea of what the Imaginarium was when we formed this
Fellowship and launched our epic quest. Ten years later, after one wild
adventure after another, we're still not completely sure! So join us in 2004
as we try to figure out where we've been and where it all leads. We'll
recall together classic episodes of our favorite Summer blockbuster, the
Cornerstone Festival Imaginarium: that mind-warping mix of serious inquiry
and excessive silliness, of culture high and low, of C. S. Lewis, Tolkien
and the Inklings, science fiction, fantasy, horror, comic books and other
literature, video games, The Movies and TV. Come hokey-pokey with us,
spinning from all-night socio-politico-religio-psycho-philosophical debate to
bleery-eyed morning-after equally-hyphenated chatter. And lest you think we
take this too seriously, be advised The Chicken will be back in 2004 (If you
know what we're talking about, then no explanation is necessary. If you
don't, then none is possible. You'll have to be there.)
"ECLECTIC" AIN'T THE HALF OF IT
Once again, we'll be embarking on a series of fantastic adventures
into the earth, under the sea, through space and time. Pith-helmets and
puttees are required attire as we leave the comfort of the fireside to follow
the likes of Jules Verne on a series of voyages extraordinaires in our
Evening Films. We'll prepare during the Daily Seminars in sessions on both the wonder
of science, and the science of wonder. In fact, we thought the Imaginarium's
10th anniversary was a good occasion to settle that longstanding squabble
between the Poets and Philosophers! So get inspired in our series on
Romantic poets, then join us on Friday night for another
only-at-the-Imaginarium event, Poetry Karaoke
(be sure to sign up at the Imaginarium tent before all the good couplets are
taken!) The rest of our seminar series involve bold explorations, too: of
the relation of memory and identity in films from Memento and Total
Recall, of the role of the image in contemporary communication, and of
the Problem of Evil with a Capital E as complicated by Postmodernism with a
Capital P. Author Micah Harris will be on hand to talk about his new graphic
novel Heaven's War, a fictional battle between the C. S. Lewis, J. R.
R. Tolkien and Charles Williams against that diabolical genius, Alistair
Crowley. In the mornings, there's Jabbers Café, caffeinated chatter for
those who figure they can sleep when they get home. And Sunday night Go Ape
with the Imaginarium in our spectacular Tenth
Anniversary Party and Midnight
Movie (Hey, we call it "Midnight Movie" but you'd better keep an eye
on the schedule to be sure...!)
