Thirty Years of Grace

I joined Jesus People USA (JPUSA) as a disillusioned college sophomore in January 1977. By the end of that year, I was writing on the Cornerstone magazine staff. JPUSA had existed just five years, and I ’d been a Christian just four. Who imagined I’d be here twenty-five years later, still writing, growing, learning, and loving amongst the dearest people in the world to me?

I find my life becoming simpler as years pass. God ’s hand of love seems to have everywhere touched my life, and the lives of those whom I love. It would be awful presumption to say I deserved it,or had earned it,or had “claimed” it. No, this gentle kissing of the Holy Spirit upon my life has nothing to do with me and everything to do with Him.

Yes,there were times of sorrow. My marriage of eight years dissolved in 1987, leading to divorce. Through that painful period, where for the first time I truly tasted what it was to be unloved, the community of believers lifted up my burdened heart and made my troubles theirs as well. When I met my Carol Elaine, also an orphan of divorce, the community gave our tentative, fearful early courting days a safe place to take root and grow into the luxuriant tree of blessings our marriage has become thirteen years later. Carol ’s two cancers in 2000 tested us, and again we found ourselves and our children surrounded by love, helping hands, and prayers.

Cornerstone magazine has undergone many changes as well. From being a newspaper used primarily to witness to nonbelievers, Cornerstone became a magazine addressing a wide variety of topics. More recently, our web presence (www.cornerstonemag.com) has grown primary as we now publish this magazine’s "hard copy"twice a year. Some things we tried not to change (let the reader be the judge). Scripture provided the lens through which we attempted to understand and interact with both one another and the surrounding world. Jesus remained our reason, our light, and our Lord.

For the Christian writer, speaking the truth in love is either a cliché or a well so deep it can never be plumbed. I pray that Cornerstone reflects creativity, honesty, and a depth of penetrating thought that does indeed bring love and truth to our readers. Cornerstone and Jesus People USA will exist as long as the Lord desires them to, and as long as we continue in His love and truth that alone sustain and give life.

Thank you for participating in our journey. We hope, by God’s grace, to continue being part of yours.
